Hi all,
during his last visit to my home, showing my puzzles to Bernhard, he was particularly attracted by "30 pentagonal sticks and dowels". I have never been "too proud" of having crafted it since I just copied a wonderful design of S Coffin introducing only the not-significant variation of aluminium.
Bernhard said that, as far as he knows, (and I thought: he knows all the puzzlemakers of the world!  Shocked) few people (maybe anyone but STC) crafted this design.... he also said there is the chance that it were one of the few pieces, on the earth surface.  Shocked
You know, every thing handcrafted is unique, but this chance of having done a  so rare design, made me curious..........
Since I have decided to participate to a italian "competition" for non-pro woodworkers, with this design, I would greatly appreciate to hear from you something about its "hystory". Thank you.

Excellent Rolly!!

Stewart said this in Ap-Art:

DESIGN #80 - 'THIRTY PINNED PENTAGONAL STICKS'

"This sulptural object uses 30 identical pentagonal sticks pinned together with 30 dowels in a sort of spherical cluster.  Each stick has seven holes.  Once you figure out how to make the pentagonal sticks and have the drilling jig adjusted correctly it is quite easy to make.  I supplied them dissasembled with instructions for assembly.  About 20 made, 1987-1988."

Note, Stewart also made two smaller versions:

#80-A : "Sticks and dowels shortened and the two end holes omitted. One made in 1988"

#80-B : "An even smaller three-hole version. One made in 1988"

Oh WOW Roly, nice job

Pull half out and see if you can stick the Chinny inside it.

With 5 sticks  sections, it generally tells me its triacontradral heritage, or heading that way

Very impressive, as usual

Hello Rolly,  I read your post and then scrolled down to see the puzzle, it put a huge smile on my face, only you would tackle such a complicated looking puzzle.  I can't even imagine how long it takes to put that thing together, again another fantastic job!!!

I dont know anything about the design, but good luck in the competition, let us know how you do!!!

thank you John. you are ever kind and helpful

Stephen, your Chinnyhedron would fit inside but........... if you look at the tip of alu dowels you will have an explanation of why I cannot follow your suggestion Grin
with wood it assembled rather tight but for alu it was harder: for the last dowels I used the hammer.
Actually now it is a sort of geometric sculpture rathen than a puzzle  Roll Eyes
Yes anglles are exactly those of 30hedron!

Thank you Peter, yes it takes longer than I expected, alu is not like wood of course and I need also to file some holes....
Again one Modn (mount once dismount NEVER) object.  Embarrassed
It is a very small competition among the user of an italian woodworkers forum ... I asked if they admit it despite the presence of metal....I will let you know.
Thank you,

I need also to file some holes....

Rolly, that's something Stewart noted as well in PWPP:

"Slight inaccuracies in the 210 holes can be corrected by reaming them through in the assembled or partially assembled state using a round file in an electric drill."

Also Stewart mentions a larger structure:

"There is also one larger and more stellated version with nine holes in each stick."

I forgot, Good luck Pal on the Competition, hope you win

You know how good your entry is, no judge can deny you that

But its nice to get recognition

Making a structure like that, you are a winner already. I love it
