Actually - even w/o the elbow, a lot of the chips will still fall into the can.  I found this out also by accident when the elbow had fallen off the lid, and was then buried in the can under a bunch of chips before I discovered it.  I think more chips will fall out if the cyclone action is working, but lots of the chips still fall into the can when the higher velocity air stream enters a bigger volume.  This makes the airflow velocity slow down and then it drops the bigger suspended particles in the can.

Peter, I will see if my friend can take some photos of the baffle box I made a while back.  Either that, or I will make a simple drawing to better convey what I tried to describe...
