an "universal" RD-based puzzle stand. I decided to critically revise my aversion about stands... but I am still convinced that a neutral material (e.g. PMMA) would have been better than wood

thank you, actually the 4-stars is one my first and it is very inaccurate....
EDIT I recycled a candle-holder for the alu base
You recognize it, do not you?

Very nice! Sphere and egg-shaped puzzles must have a stand, I have two such puzzles with their own wood stands, but they aren't universal. I like the weight in the base to keep it from tipping over. I have a Mova Globe that has a clever stand made from 3 rods that would fit varying diameters.

Notice that he uses another strategy to cut and join the L-shaped elements which trasform the hex prism into the 4 stars.
I prefer, especially when it is done in alternate contrasting colours, this one
