an "universal" RD-based puzzle stand. I decided to critically revise my aversion about stands... but I am still convinced that a neutral material (e.g. PMMA) would have been better than wood

Embarrassed thank you, actually the 4-stars is one my first and it is very inaccurate....

EDIT I recycled a candle-holder for the alu base  Grin You recognize it, do not you?

Very nice!  Sphere and egg-shaped puzzles must have a stand, I have two such puzzles with their own wood stands, but they aren't universal.  I like the weight in the base to keep it from tipping over.  I have a Mova Globe that has a clever stand made from 3 rods that would fit varying diameters.

When compared to my tentatives, this of Lee Krasnow is on another planet http://pwdbp.com/?action=17596.showImage
Notice that he uses another strategy to cut and join the L-shaped elements which trasform the hex prism into the 4 stars.
I prefer, especially when it is done in alternate contrasting colours, this one http://pwdbp.com/?action=18138.showImage which is like the mine one above.
Stewart in this monochrome version used the first one http://pwdbp.com/?action=17641.showImage
