Ok I will show the mine. I introduced a minor variation to triumph which I called "checkerboard triumph" because is more color symmetric than the usual design. We may think triumph dissected into 24 pentahedra 12 one color the others in another color. Instead of using center blocks I joined the 5hedra by alternating color as in the figure. The result IMHO is more appealing than standard in the star configuration... less in the column one. Then this may be considered as a stupid variation.. However I am showing it anyway. It is rather poorly crafted  Embarrassed and woods are wengè and guatambù.

Very nice Rolly...that's some of the blackest Wenge I've ever seen Shocked

My avatar pic is actually a 'Fusion-Confusion', I had made a run a few years ago to sell on 'cubic'... Wink

Here's a facebook public link to an album with some of my past sold puzzles Wink

Yes it is, but consider that for some strange reason it becomes much darker with shellac finish

amazing look and colors (holly and bloodwood, I suppose). Shellac would probably change them also... Undecided  but now I have that one dewaxed to test!

John your facebook pics shows a puzzle booth in a mall.  I believe I once read that you had a puzzle booth, I assume this must of been it.  Wow had I been walking through that mall and come across your puzzle booth!  I would have been a like a kid in a candy store.  I assumed you closed the booth down, I can only shake my head at all the people that must of walked by your booth without stopping.  Oh what they missed!

John, your avatar and Rolly's puzzle looks 'similar' to one you kindly sent to me, but I have just looked in your facebook album and can't find a name for mine. I'd like to know it's proper name for when the pics get on my site Grin

Yeah, unfortunately Holly is affected no matter what finish you use...the worst part however is the bleeding of other woods into it Sad Wink

I originally used pure Tung oil on my puzzles but switched to lacquer exclusively Wink

Yeah, believe it or not I sold some puzzles at a booth I shared with a 'Wedgit' dealer, we split the cost of it, which totalled a $100 bucks a day...I somehow broke even and he lost money Grin  My puzzles were a detriment to his sales Grin

Steven, I think I sent you a diagonal star, can't say for sure Embarrassed  Can you post a pic?  I'm pretty sure it's one from Roby, nothing special really and better examples would be normally be made in a variety of exotic woods... Wink

I love it anyway Grin    and my youngest lad has found about 3 ways to put it back together. But you should have seen his face when he got it apart!!! He thought he had broken it and went white Grin

Yeah, I have to say that I have never seen wenge that black.  I can't believe that I spent so much on ebony.

Hmmm when I bought the timber I was favourably surprised by how dark it was, but it was not so black. It is due to the light in the photo, the "blonde" shellac, maybe some reaction that happens with alcohol of the shellac... I do not know.
Using dewaxed shellac, which should be almost colourless and isopropylic alcohol, and photographing in sunlight, that wenge' appears like this:

still dark but not as ebony.
