Hey!!!! why is this forum called 'WOODWORKING' techniques/tips/tricks Evil  What about wonderful natural steel and plastic Grin

Here are a couple of pics to show how I'M gonna do it. I fell into a couple of 'brain fart' traps before I figured it out.  Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing!!! Evil Roll Eyes

One pic shows how the cuts are made in the lathe. Topslide set to 30 deg. 60deg cutter ( included angle)
The white piece with the flat tops was what I thought I needed. Wrong!!! Here the topslide was set to 60deg.

I found that the most critical setting was that the cutter must be perfectly on lathe centre hieght.  The white one is off centre a touch.

Eventually the penny dropped and I realised that the peak and valley angles must be the same.

So that's how they do it.  I have often wondered how they made the decorations on pool cues where the wood was connected together.  What would be really cool is to make a 3rd section of an entirely different color and insert it between the two posts.

Very cool Steven...I'm amazed how quickly you solve issues, making puzzles might be a little to easy for you, may I suggest you move right into puzzleboxes Grin

Here we go Grin

Quick Chinny Code Crack Pen

I just recut the same black and white pieces after resetting the router perfectly centred and parallel vertically and horizontally. It took more time to set up than to make and turn. I kinda like it

Ha Ha , You make me laugh, very well done Steven

You are indeed the McGuyver of pen turners, very inspirng

The way you, as a matter of factly, just churn a new design up in a few days, is awesome

But I bet you you can't make it a random cut one thou  Evil Evil

Keep making them, you have my attention

Better  check my centre point again, maybe thats why mine has gaps

Maybe stick to pen turning, you'll kill us in the puzzle  making  world

Don't worry Chinny, this was just a pratice run Evil
Next one will have random cuts, but you can't make a bet without doing something if you lose Evil

So......... if I can make a pen with random cuts, then you must make one too. Grin

My leave is now finished and I will be away from home and my tools for a while. So you have a little extra time Wink Cheesy

Stephen, I really don't want to tell you how to do stuff as I'm learning from you.  But your centre point could still be on centre. The gap may be caused by the router not being perfectly parallel.  I used a long 6mm rod in my router to set it up. Much easier than trying to use the cutter. Grin

I hate you  Grin  I'm still ordering my 60 degree router bit and you've gone and mastered the technique already.  Good thing you're going back to work, it'll give the rest of us a chance to catch up.   Seriously, the pen is very cool Steven.  I can see a lot of design opportunities there.  Well done.
