Just another turner

Hi folks,
I see a lot of familiar names over here. That Welsh Rodent suggested I come by and look at the puzzles and man Am I Impressed. I've done a couple simple burr puzzles but feel like a Model T compared to a Porshe when I see what some of you folks are creating. Now I just have to tell my wife that Skippy made me do it when I start buying a few more toys to at least get to the beginner level of puzzle making. I never had the honor of meeting Eagle and only traded a couple of comments with him just before he left the IAP but he inspired me greatly. His advice to try figuring it out myself before asking questions has lead to some of my most enjoyable time in pencrafting. For those who don't know me I lilve in southern Maine, Married for 20 years to the same wonderful lady. Have two teenage daughters who drive the wife and I insane. They both enjoy wood working the oldest is my resin mixmaster and the youngest is currently working her first band saw box. I was a ship captain in an earlier career Now I travel around inspecting ships. When I'm not playing with wood or driving the kids around it's hunting and fishing that keeps me busy. guess I'll hush up now and go back to oogling all the puzzles and take Eagles advice to see if I can figure any of them out. I figure I'll still have a bunch of questions so be forwarned.

Thanks for coming aboard!
Questions? Oh love those...fire away, be warned however, sometimes they spark debate....now that's when the fun starts

Hiya Phil
Welsh Rodent?
?? Mmmmmm I wonder who you are referring to.
But welcome anyway
These puzzle nutters have me hooked too I'm afraid.
But I must admit that I'm secretly enjoying the new experience and glad there a bunch of old pro's here ready to answer questions.
I have to say that I have a sneaking suspicion that they don't all know how to write though.
Otherwise they'd be queueing up to join in the puzzle/pen swap. But don't say anything as I'm not sure yet just how sensitive a bunch they are.

One minute you are an elephant, next you're a rhino
I'm confused !!!! What next, a boomslang that will bite a little rodent butt?

I'm actually a horned chameleon crossed with some rhino and elephant. Elephant for memory and rhine for plain bad assedness.
Die slurpie van vaan en die slurpie van agter help ook natuurlik baie!

Slurpie = trunk of the elephant Slurpie is the dimunitive of slurp.
vaan should have been van
What I said was: A trunk in front and one at the back helps a lot.
End result of it all is that I must stick to english or get kicked out.

Hey Charlie,
long time no see, I can make it over here, I just can't make it to Springfield. Always something coming up or down. I had that piece of Trustone you gave me in my hand today. I've got 5 pens ahead of it in the que then it hits the lathe. Still trying to decide what to do with it. I think I'll go with a kit for this one to get a feel for it then go for the kitless with a later piece. I've got a statesman kit it would look great on. I also drilled a couple pieces of the soapstone. 1/4 hole in them right now, used a masonry bit it ended up a little oversized due to the nature of the bit. I think I'll try a glass bit on the next one. I think this first set is going to be a cigar. The Fein sander with the carbide rasp does remove some stone pretty fast not exactly what I'd call turning though more like sanding. I'll try the carbide insert gouge as soon as I get it on the lathe.
