That is the design that the Sleeper Stopper is based on.  See my first post with the extract where it is shown.

What I meant with the bolt and nust, is that the two bead are replaced by a bolt with a hole throught the center on one side and a nut on the other side.  The aim then is to either join them or seperate them.  Grin

Very cool to see where the idea grew from.  Yes I like the Nut and bolt version you described, my wood version is just something I put together a while back  Grin  Funny that it also is a nut and a bolt  Grin

Is this a Stewart Coffin design?  I have a vintage puzzle I believe it was called "Strong Man" that uses the same principle  Huh? Here's a photo

Peter, that exact puzzle is well documented on page 114 of Jerry Slocum/Jack Botermans 'PUZZLES OLD AND NEW' (ISBN 0-295-96579-7)
apparently the puzzle is called 'The Jolly Nigger Puzzle', (it looks like you're missing the ball bearing that would have been in the middle) obviously the goal is to have both beads on the same side but the other puzzle is to remove the 'ball bearing'...

Thanks for the info.  I love old puzzles  Grin  I do have a ball (not the original) but I took it out for the picture.  It's a neat two puzzles in one.
