Here's a direct quote from Johan in another post:

John kindly sent me one last year made from some of the last Wild Olive Rootknot that came out of my Father's garage when we cleaned it after he passed away.

Steven, this wood was some of the most beautiful wood I've ever made into a pen Wink

Hi Steven

This one is all JOHN's / Boet's work.

It is wild olive root knot, or "wortelknoets".  When you've got a dead olive tree, dig out the roots, thats where you'll find this.

Just a question, where do all the BURL that you make pens from come.  I'm convinced that some of it is root knot that's dug up when a tree died.

Well....technically 'Burl' is a cancerous growth on the tree and not from the root.  Cutting this 'Burl' off the tree is actually good for the health of the tree Wink

Sorry, I haven't got around to reading all the older posts yet . Embarrassed

John, it may be good for the tree, but I challenge you to get permission from some tree owner to cut it off. Shocked Probably get shot first. Grin

Johan, there are several vendors on our 'other' site, IAP,  that periodically have burls ( or burrs to other folks )for sale.

The are one or two guys from South Africa too.
