I remember with great fondness two phone calls with Eagle although there were several more.
The very 1st call was EARLY one Saturday morning (Eagle had free minutes through his provider then), as I answered, her eis this voice on the other end saying "Bless me Father for I have sinned."  It caught me off guard and I started to stutter, huh, who, what.   Then he asked me if I knew who was calling.  And I knew that voice had to be the famously/infamous, the one and only Eagle.  I explained to him that I was Baptist and didn't do the confessional.  We both laughed and went to discussing other things.

The other comment that stands out in my memory was one that I have already shared with Lynne.  Eagle & I were talking pretty regularly about a lot of dubjects and he was sharing that he was upset about the churches in his area.  I had been considering a move in my ministry and had been in school near where Eagle lived.  I just off the wall made the remark that maybe God would lead me down to the Camden area to pastor one of the churches.  Then he could come and be a part of that one.  He laughed and said,
Pastor Bill, I ain't going to no ***** church."  At least he was honest.

One last memory was meeting Eagle in person for the 1st time.  He made the effort to meet me in Columbia, even though gas was expensive and he was on a tight budget.  We spent 2 hours or more just talking and enjoying the time.  He was a natural at showing his pens to whoever walked by and would wngage them in conversation about a multitude of subjects.  Then we had out picture taken together with him covering half of his face so he woukdn"t be recognized.

See I had no idea where he lived. If I had known he was in SC I would have sought him out as I live in Ware Shoals. Oh well, just goes to show you got to strike while the iron is hot.
