Or is that your Alaska Bar number???

Thanks for the compliments, Steve, John, Rotert!  Sorry, no photos if the pieces, it would give too much away.  See, it's only a simple modification of another Coffin puzzle...  Smiley

Oh, BTW - Padauk and a lighter wood are tricky when finishing since the Padauk can "bleed" into the finish and sort of glaze the other wood in the finishing process.  If you others do use Padauk and a lighter wood in laminations, be sure to blow off the pieces really well with compressed air before finishing.  This will help, but not sure if the problem will be completely eliminated...

How about 'Les Miserables'.... Wink

I've always wondered what a wood lamination of a 'diagonal cube' would look like, now I have a better idea! Wink

Oh yeah the dreaded 'bleeding' of padauk, I've unsucessfully tried to use padauk and holly together, it still irks me Angry

Exceptional pen, and yes that was exactly what I was talking about.  It would not be proper for me to have such a pen myself.  It needs to stay with its creator.  I am just elated that somebody has done the impossible

OK, Pic 1      shows the conventional crack eggs , small , large and combo

Pic 2     shows the latest random cracks, real learning curve

bottle variation cause I got fed up making eggs

Pic 3     An  inside out turning of an apple,  pen makers may  like this concept in their pen design

Pic 4,    Shows the simple jig set up, not perfect but it works for me

using the pin indexing from the Jet lathe, but working blind as you can't see the index plate

Well God bless Stephen Chin for being able to make what I am now calling "Sphere o' the Chinmeister"!!! As you can see, I've had three go's at this lil' bugger so far and nothin'!!! Angry Huh? Angry They say that three times a charm and I thought I was gonna have it that time, that's the closest I've come so far, then parts of it flew across the garage!!!

Well, back to the drawing board. Stephen, if you have any advice that would be greatly aprecciated.

Not a total loss though. I have really enjoyed doing it and it has been a major learning experience. So, YIPPEE!!! Grin Cheesy Grin

Ahhhh Steve,

Brings back memories
My fisrt finn lattice, I picked up 8 of the 10 pieces when it chuncked, glued them and sturdy the damage
Perseverence , stubboness and luck, keep at it. don't give up
Get a book on lattice work and practise

If you look closely at the Osage orange ball box,  the outside shell its done at 45 degrees
Can't remember how, it was 3 years ago, from memory a cube then re centre half way, something like that, think I tack glue too
Lathies can't imagine how differcult till you do one

Eventually you will fluke one. Face Allah, Stand on 1 foot, full moon, fast lathe ,  3 very sharp home made 3 mm chisels, flat, angle left and angle right. Praying definitely helps. Not for the faint heart,,,,,thump, thump-thump....etc

The pointy cone ones are even more exciting. Its like 2 propellers spinning when you turn the centre part, Wooooeee

Well, here is sphere #5. Ohhhhhhhhhh so close!!! Undecided I'm gonna get this rascal, or die trying!!! Shocked Grin Stephen, thanks so much for your advice, but, I have to say that Roby was right on with the tongue thing.  Grin Wink Grin This whole thing is a huge learning curve. I love it. I never did a whole lot of sphere turning, and the ones that I have done weren't so spherical. This has been great practice! This structure is neat in that it wants to compress on itself as you are turning the outer lattice work. Oh, tricky bugger!!!

Dare I say it.  Yes I will say it.  You know, the pieces would not break if you made it out of holly.  No, I know that we have a long running gag about holly, but really, you might try changing woods.

I would try holly, bloodwood, yellowheart, or ebony, possibly pear.
